- The "Cradle of Civilisation" is a common term for the lands now in Iraq. In ancient times, Iraq was known as Mesopotamia (“Land Between the Rivers”), and the kingdoms/cultures were the Akkad, Babylon, Assyria and Sumer, the earliest known civilizations.
- Modern Iraq dates back to 1920, and the British Mandate for Mesopotamia and the League of Nations, which became the Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq in 1932. Then in 1958, the monarchy was overthrown by the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party and the Iraqi Republic was created until 2003.
- The capital and largest city is Baghdad.
- Iraq is home to diverse ethnic groups including Arabs, Kurds, Turkmens, Assyrians, Armenians, Yazidis, Sabian-Mandaeans, Persians and Shabakis with similarly diverse geography and wildlife.
- The majority of the country's 40 million citizens are Muslims, and other recognized religions include Christianity, Yazidism, Mandaeism, Yarsanism and Zoroastrianism.
- The official languages of Iraq are Arabic and Kurdish, with other recognized regional languages being English, Neo-Aramaic, Turkish and Armenian.

- America made Saddam - During the mid 2000's it was popular among the dim of wit, and big of mouth, to claim that Saddam was created by America. That kind of rhetoric tends to come from the uninformed, the trolls, or both. Saddam was never "our boy" like some claim.
- Preemptive War - Iraq was the first preemptive war except for all the others. All wars start with a series of escalations on both sides. All offer multiple opportunities to escalate or deescalate (back down). A fight doesn't happen because one guy throws the first punch, but because both sides chose to not walk away until eventually a fight is the only natural outcome.
